How magnificent is the Way of the Sage!
Vast and boundless, it nourishes all things and ascends to the heights of Heaven.
Abundant and grand! There are three hundred major rites and three thousand minor observances.
They await the virtuous one to put them into practice.
Thus it is said: "Without supreme virtue, the supreme Way cannot be attained."
Therefore, the noble person honors their innate moral nature and pursues learning with diligence. They extend their knowledge to the broadest scope yet delve into the subtlest details, reach the heights of wisdom yet follow the Mean. By reviewing the past, they gain new insights; through sincerity and reverence, they uphold ritual propriety. Hence, they are not arrogant when in high position, nor do they rebel when in lowly station. When the nation follows the Way, their words can inspire prosperity; when the nation is in chaos, their silence allows them to endure. As the Book of Songs says: "With wisdom and discernment, one preserves oneself." Is this not what it means?
