睦州道明问一个新来的僧人：“你刚离开哪里，打哪来？”

那僧人听后大喝一声。

睦州并未被他吓到，也不吃惊，只答一句：“老和尚我被你喝了一声。”

那僧人又大喝一声。

于是睦州问道：“你喝个三四声后，准备怎么办？”

这时候，那僧人却突然哑口无语，无言以对了。

于是，睦州骂道：“你这虚张声势的家伙！”

Muzhou Daoming asked a newly arrived monk, “Where have you just come from? Where are you arriving from?”

The monk responded with a loud shout. Muzhou wasn't startled or intimidated; he calmly replied, “This old monk has been shouted at by you.”  

The monk shouted again. Muzhou then asked, “After shouting three or four times, what will you do next?”  

At this point, the monk suddenly fell silent and had nothing further to say. Muzhou scolded him, “You empty-headed pretender!”

睦州问僧：“近离甚处。”僧便喝。

州云：“老僧被汝一喝。”僧又喝。

州云：“三喝、四喝后作么生？”

僧无语。州便打，云：“这掠虚汉！”
