黄檗希运开示大众说：“你们诸位，尽是些酒囊饭袋、愚钝之人。像你们这样子行脚参访，走到哪里能开悟呢？不知道大唐国里根本就没有禅师吗？”

这时，有个僧人站出来说：“现在，各地都有人在授徒，带领大众修行，这该怎么说呢？”

黄檗答：“我不是说没有禅，而是说没有师。”

Huangbo Xiyun addressed the assembly, saying,  

“All of you here are nothing but foolish, worthless fellows who merely fill your bellies with food and wine. Wandering around aimlessly as you do, how could you possibly attain enlightenment? Don't you realize there are actually no true Zen masters throughout the entire Tang empire?”

At that moment, a monk stood up and asked, “But nowadays, there are teachers everywhere instructing students and guiding people in practice. How do you explain that?”

Huangbo replied, “I didn't say there is no Zen; I said there are no masters.”

黄檗示众云：“汝等诸人。尽是噇酒糟汉，恁么行脚，何处有今日。还如大唐国里无禅师么？”

时有僧出，云：“只如诸方匡徒领众，又作么生？”

檗云：“不道无禅，只是无师。”
