What Heaven imparts to humanity is called nature; to follow this nature is called the Dao; to cultivate oneself in accordance with the Dao is called education. The Dao is that which cannot be separated from us for even a moment. If it could be separated, it would not be the Dao. Therefore, the noble person remains vigilant even in solitude, cautious in what is unseen and fearful in what is unheard. There is nothing more visible than the hidden, nothing more manifest than the subtle—thus the noble person is watchful over their innermost self.

When joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure have not yet arisen, this state is called equilibrium (zhōng). When these emotions arise and are expressed with due measure, this state is called harmony (hé). Equilibrium is the foundation of all under Heaven; harmony is the universal path that connects all things. When equilibrium and harmony are perfectly realized, Heaven and Earth take their rightful places, and all things flourish in their natural order.
